Women of the Motion Picture Industry

The primary objective of WOMPI is Service and the Promotion of Good Will for the Motion Picture Industry. WOMPI, International is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-partisan organization founded in 1952 in Dallas, Tx by a group of women employed in the motion picture industry. The first WOMPI convention was held in Dallas, Tx with four clubs in attendance: Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta and Memphis. Through the years the Club grew to a total of 22 clubs, with one club in Toronto, Canada which make up WOMPI International. At that time, to be a WOMPI, one had to be actively employed in the motion picture industry. Today, with the withdrawal of the industry from most markets, to become a member, you must be, or have been, actively employed in the motion picture industry or affiliated industries which are related to the film industry. Currently WOMPI International consists of 6 clubs; Charlotte, NC – Dallas, TX – Hollywood/Los Angeles, CA – Kansas City, MO – Memphis, TN – and New Orleans, LA. In addition, WOMPI has members-at-large in Des Moines, Jacksonville, New York, Toronto and Washington, DC.

“THE STORY OF WOMPI”

WOMPI was organized in Dallas, TX by a group of women employed in the Motion Picture Industry.  The first WOMPI Convention was held in 1954 in Dallas, TX  with four clubs in attendance:  New Orleans, Atlanta, Memphis and Dallas.  Through the years we have had a total of 22 Clubs but now we have remaining, six (6) chartered clubs which make up WOMPI, International (Charlotte, Dallas, Hollywood/Los Angeles, Kansas City, Memphis, and New Orleans. In addition we have members-at-large in Des Moines, Jacksonville, New York, Toronto and Washington D.C.

WOMPI is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-partisan organization whose members have the sole right to govern and control all their activities within the provisions of the By Laws and Standing Rules of WOMPI, International.  Officers in the Local Club consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.  The Board of Directors is composed of the above Officers and the Chairperson of the following Standing Committees:  Membership, Community Service, Bylaws, Finance, Industry Service, Bulletin, Will Rogers, Historian and Caring and Sharing.  To become a member of WOMPI you must be, or have been, actively employed in the motion picture industry or affiliated industries which are related to the film industry.

The primary objective of WOMPI is Service and the Promotion of Good Will for the Motion Picture Industry…  Each club on a local level has their own individual Community Service and Industry Service projects.  WOMPI over the years has averaged over 5,000 SERVICE hours and spent approximately $10,000 on SERVICE projects on a yearly basis.  This Service has encompassed working with the homeless, needy families, battered women’s shelters, scholarships, youth centers, institutions, hospitals, orphanages, nursing homes, Goodwill Industries, rolling cancer bandages, sponsoring children for summer camps and Senior Citizens.  Services have also been rendered to Fund Raising Agencies such as the Heart Association, Muscular Dystrophy, United Fund, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Easter Seal Society, Cerebral Palsy, Leukemia and Kidney Foundations.  Clubs have assisted in various TELETHONS promoting some of the above.

WOMPI International’s project is the WILL ROGERS INSTITUTE and this is the permanent project of the organization.  All Clubs participate in this project through a program called “DOLLARS FROM DAMES” based upon a suggested voluntary contribution of $15.00 per member per year, plus contributions received for Memorials, Honorariums,  Special Donations, and Special Projects which the Local Clubs designate for Will Rogers throughout the year.  To date  WOMPI has contributed over $385,000 to the Will Rogers Institute  through the “Dimes/Dollars from Dames” program, special projects,  supplying a total of 732 medical books for their library, and raising $40,000 to equip a Pulmonary Research Laboratory at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains, N.Y.

A WOMPI  Convention is held annually in the fall of the year at which time all the Clubs meet with WOMPI, International. The International Convention is for the purpose of promoting the Motion Picture Industry, receiving annual reports of Officers and Committee Chairpersons, amending By Laws, electing International Officers, and for transacting any other business that may arise.  The WOMPI INTERNATIONAL  CONVENTION is a good place and time to meet new friends and renew old friendships and reminisce about the “good old  days of the motion picture industry” and contemplate the future of the industry…..

The Women of the Motion Picture Industry have been very proud to support The Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers Foundation for many year.

Each year at our annual convention we make a donation to the organization.

Will Rogers Institute

The Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers has traveled a rewarding path since its inception in New York in 1939. The Foundation unofficially began as a group of industry personalities who gathered once a year to meet old friends socially.

The stated goal of the organization, as drafted by its founders, is: "To establish a self-perpetuating fund to assist Pioneers of the motion picture industry who find themselves in need; the assistance to consist of direct financial aid, medical care and temporary business subsistence during periods of unemployment for eligible applicants."

In 1951, the group officially took the name of the Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers and broadened its scope to seek out veterans of the motion picture industry who needed financial aid and assistance. Throughout the years and to this day, the Foundation has believed in keeping its generosity quiet and respecting the anonymity and dignity of those receiving assistance.

In 2002, the Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers merged with the Will Rogers Memorial Fund to create the most meaningful charity supported by the motion picture industry. The Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers changed its name to the Motion Picture Pioneers Assistance Fund and is now owned and operated by the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation. The Fund is now located in Los Angeles, California, and is dedicated to helping motion picture industry veterans who need aid in times of emergency or distress.
